OSI Model

The OSI Stands for Open Systems Interconnection. It is the model system for computer networking IP Networks technology. It defines seven layers. The layers are:

7 Application layer
6 Presentation layer
5 Session layer
4 Transport layer
3 Network layer
2 Data link layer
1 Physical layer

Application layer works behind the application softwares in our computers.
Presentation layer is responsible for formatting and conversion of data from one form to another form.
Session layer manages different sessions of different programs running at the same time.
Transport layer is responsible for transfer of data of UDP and TCP.
Network Layer works on L3 logical addressing (IP addressing).
Data link layer transfer data on the same network with the help of MAC addressing or Hardware addressing.
Physical layer is physical media of the link and transmits the data in form of bits and bytes.

L3 Routing in IP Networks

What is L3 routing?

Routing is a procedure of transmitting a packet on a network from one place to another. The transmission happens with the help of addressing mechanism, IP Addressing. IP address is a 128 bit logical address. It can be bind on different networking devices like routers and L3 switches. The routers transmit the IP packets after finding their routes in the routing table. If the route of a packet does not exist, the packet drops immediately. The distribution of routes in a network can take place by two means:
  • Static routing
  • Dynamic routing
In static routing, The administrator has to bind all of the IPs on every single device manually. It means any change in network or addressing will result in reconfiguration of all devices.
While in dynamic routing,  routes between the devices exchanges using different protocols. This is more normally the preferred choice of engineers in large and complex networks. List of Dynamic routing protocols is given:
  • EIGRP
  • OSPF
  • ISIS
  • BGP
